Senior receives Academic All-State honor

Brandie McAllister, Editor-in-Chief

It’s not the easiest task to be the recipient of a 2012 Academic All-State Award, but senior Laura Waldman has done just that.

All-Staters, the top 100 public high school seniors, are chosen from a pool of 610 students and nominated based on a series of academic achievements like extracurricular activities, community involvement, and the essay each nominee submits.

Waldman, who plans to attend the University of Tulsa and get a degree of Engineering, was one of the 40 All-Staters to be a National Merit finalist.

She will receive a $1,000 merit-based scholarship as well as a medal and will be recognized at the 26th annual Academic Awards Banquet on May 19.

When asked to reflect on her four highly successful high school years Waldman shared that “Bixby taught me how to work and organize my time. Prioritizing is an important skill to learn. I also know that I need to understand the material and not just memorize things for the test.”

Congratulations to Laura and all other recipients statewide.
